Stained Concrete: New Trends Today

Stained concrete historically blends the conservativeness of traditional concrete stain colors with the ever changing and modernized color and flooring industries. Because of this the commercial flooring industry puts pressure on the traditional appearance of stain to transition and keep up with the ‘times’. This has created a divide between traditional concrete finishers who hold true to the earth-tone hues and translucent finishes of concrete stain and the modern generation of concrete finishers that opt to use the new and easy formulas that are comprised of bright colors giving it a new age feel. This could also be viewed more as an opportunity for new and old to collaborate together to still set trends utilizing both traditional and modern components. For decades earth-tone stains, such as terra cotta hues dominated the concrete finishing industry. The design cycle of earth-tone hues is coming to an end and the industry is making way for new brighter and cleaner colors and mediums. New concrete dyes and acrylic based stains allow the concrete contractors to meet the growing demand of the new trends and allows them to be creative with new looks and designs.

Held true in the stained concrete industry is that every job is unique, This is because stains enhance the natural variations of the concrete or cement overlay that they are applied to. The natural variations in the concrete create a distinct and unique appearance when the stain is applied. New stain and dye technology have taken this process to a whole other level. Contractors are able to use the new stain and dye technology to create a new and unique look consisting of colors not seen before with traditional stain.

New applications are also trending in the concrete staining industry. Polished concrete has been greatly popular in recent years. Because of polished concrete's ability to absorb  dyes deep into its surface we are seeing more dyes being used with polished concrete and less stains. Customers like the clean look of polished and dyed concrete with more variations of color options available. (Click here to see photos of dyed concrete.)

As the industry grows as does the competition. This can mean new contractors with little experience. While staining concrete may look simple enough, there is a lot that goes into it that doesn’t meet the eye. It takes years of experience to find a top quality product and to know how to combine and match colors. With the new influx of new contractors you will find low quality results which has an overall negative effect on the industry. Often, new competition will have lower costs due to inexperience and low quality products. It is important to do your research before choosing a concrete contractor.  This will ensure that the customer is satisfied and that the job is done right the first time with lasting results.
